My inspiration…
My parents are doctors so growing up I would always hear them discussing their patients. They would spend most of their time in the hospital and come home tired but also happy because they had saved someone’s life. The humanitarian aspect of this profession inspired me. I realized I could help people restore their sight.
My opportunity…
Oculoplastic surgeons in the U.S. are considered to be the most qualified of this specialty in the world so the idea that we can gain firsthand knowledge from them through this program is unbelievable. I have the opportunity to study from the best in the field, to improve my skills and to learn new methods of treatment that currently don’t exist in Armenia.
My goals…
My goal is to have this NextGen Program be a continuation of the original AECP Fellowship Program, the first generation of ophthalmologists in Armenia who traveled to the U.S. for fellowships through the AECP. People in Armenia need oculoplastic surgery but because the specialty is new here, there are not many doctors who can help. I plan to help these patients and develop this specialty in my country.
My hopes and dreams…
Each fellowship opportunity, ophthalmology conference and practical exchange program is critical for the development of local doctors in Armenia. I am happy there is a program that will help realize my dream.
