VAHAN PAPOYAN, GLAUCOMA

My inspiration…

I have always like to help people and medicine is a rare profession where humanism and professionalism are closely linked. I believe if you are not kind, you cannot be a good doctor, no matter how skilled and knowledgeable you are.

My specialty…

I was fascinated with glaucoma from my first lesson and was resolute in my decision to specialize in it. During my residency, my interest in the subspecialty only grew as I had the privilege to learn under the leadership of Dr. Lilit Voskanyan, an AECP Fellow and Chief of the only Glaucoma Clinic in Armenia.

My opportunity…

My participation in the NextGen Fellowship Program is a unique opportunity to improve upon my current skills and use this gained knowledge to advance the health and quality of life for people in my country. This program will enhance my skills, but more importantly, it will enable patients in Armenia to receive treatment that is at the standard of countries like the U.S.

My goals…

Eye care is already quite developed in Armenia because of the AECP. What’s most important now is to stay abreast of the newest developments. Through this fellowship, my goal is to learn and become proficient in the most progressive methods of glaucoma treatment. If I can help raise the quality of eye care in Armenia to an even greater level then I have done my job.

My hopes and dreams…

I hope every Armenian citizen soon has the opportunity to get a health exam and, as a result, become aware of the early stages of any disease they may have. I hope every Armenian gains access to the most advanced treatments regardless of where they receive care or which doctor is treating him. And I hope Armenia continues to embrace advancements in eye care and our citizens continue to receive cutting-edge care.
