ARAKS DAVTYAN, CORNEA

My inspiration…

Dr. Anna Hovakimyan, an AECP Fellow and Chief of the only Cornea Clinic in Armenia, was my inspiration to get into ophthalmology and to be a cornea specialist. The way she communicates with her patients and transfers her knowledge to the next generation of physicians, myself included, is very exciting.

My specialty…

Aside from being inspired by Dr. Hovakimyan, I chose to specialize in the cornea because there are new developments in the field almost every day. It’s an amazing new world where every day you can discover life-changing news about cornea tissue and other elements.

My opportunity…

The NextGen Program is an opportunity to refresh my existing knowledge as an ophthalmologist; to learn something new and have access to advanced education and modern literature; and to communicate with other doctors and share our experiences in the field. I am grateful to all those who have made this opportunity possible, especially the donors who are sponsoring this program. I look forward to the road ahead as I prepare to visit the U.S. as a NextGen Fellow.

My goals…

One of my fundamental goals not only in my career, but in my life, is to be a useful and caring person and to be of service to my country. Because of this program, I can accomplish this lifelong goal in ways that I have, so far, only dreamed. During my U.S. fellowship, I plan to learn new approaches of diagnosis and treatment from field leaders and bring that advanced knowledge back with me to Armenia.

My hopes and dreams…

My hope is for Armenia to evolve into a powerful and advanced country, not only in eye care but throughout the medical world. My dream is to have Armenia follow the same high-quality standards in medicine as developed countries like the U.S.
