ZARA DRAVAJYAN, CORNEA

My inspiration…

For as long as I can remember, I have always wanted to be a doctor. My inspiration began when visiting eye clinics as an observer in my spare time. There, I saw how a small procedure could bring such a remarkable improvement to a patient’s life. I cannot imagine a more fulfilling job.

My specialty…

I chose to be an ophthalmologist and a cornea specialist in particular because I love the combination of surgery and medicine. Cornea specialists save a patient’s sight by transplanting corneas and managing difficult corneal and uveal diseases. I have been lucky to work with these specialists in Armenia and they have inspired me to follow in their footsteps.

My opportunity…

The Next Generation Fellowship Program, for me, is a unique opportunity to upgrade my clinical knowledge and professional skills and ultimately to grow and progress in the ophthalmology world. It is every doctor’s dream.

My goals…

My goal is to become a more experienced specialist in my loved profession, to use my newly acquired skills for the benefit of my country; and to ultimately create worthy successors of my profession. Since there is no cornea department in the clinic where I work, it would also be my personal mission and privilege to open a cornea center there upon returning from my fellowship in the U.S.

My hopes and dreams…

Thanks to the AECP, the eye care industry in Armenia becomes more developed every year. It can now compete with many countries. My hope is to see Armenia at a level where we are able to teach physicians traveling here for advanced training. My dream is for Armenia to become an international hub for ophthalmology, a place where eye surgeons come to learn and observe just as I am going to do in the U.S.
