Spitak is a town in the Lori Marzi that was completely destroyed during the devastating 1988 earthquake, and has been gradually rebuilt since. The town has its name — “white” in Armenian — because of the presence of white limestone rocks in the area.
Gyumri is the capital of the Shirak Marz in the northwestern part of Armenia. The first settlement at the location of modern-day Gyumri was founded in 401 BC, by Greek colonists.
