Hasmik’s Story
“I came in hopeless and I am leaving with hope.”
Hasmik has had an unbearably difficult life — she has endured pain and poverty and has been consumed with extreme loneliness that none of us could ever imagine. Yet, she kept going.
As an 18-year-old young woman, Hasmik lost her arm in a trolley car accident and as a result never married. Her parents and siblings are now gone and she lives all alone in a remote village.
For the past three years, Hasmik has been blind as a result of cataracts and says she wants to eat, but can’t see to prepare food or eat. Her loss of sight has impacted her entire life and she has no access to care — she has no money and cannot travel to Yerevan.
When the EyeCare Project’s Mobile Eye Hospital visited Hasmik’s village, her life changed. She said, “I came in hopeless and I am leaving with hope.”
