SUI CHIEN WONG

EXCEPTIONAL OPHTHALMOLOGIST TRAINS ARMENIAN PHYSICIANS

Dr. S. Chien Wong, an exceptional ophthalmologist and vitreo-retinal surgeon in London, UK, is among a handful of doctors in the world with a super-specialty practice in pediatric vitreo-retinal surgery and retinovascular diseases. He manages complex pediatric retina at Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children and Moorfields Eye Hospital, both world leading hospitals for children and eye care. He is one of only two surgeons in the world with expertise in pioneering endoscopic vitreo-retinal surgery in retinopathy of prematurity.

Since early 2014, Dr. Wong has been working very closely with the Armenian EyeCare Project to train two leading Armenian surgeons to treat babies and young children with blinding retinal disease, including retinopathy of prematurity, at the AECP Center of Excellence for Prevention of Childhood Blindness in Yerevan.

In addition to his many visits to Armenia, Dr. Wong employs telesurgery to ensure that doctors in Armenia have access to live surgical support and mentoring at all times. This is a partnership between Great Ormond Street Hospital in London and The Vision Centre at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles.

“The children of Armenia are extremely fortunate to now have access to the most advanced vitreo-retinal surgical treatments in Yerevan. Lifelong blindness is thankfully no longer inevitable in some of these babies and young children,” says Dr. Wong. “I have been humbled by the Armenian doctors’ dedication and hunger for new knowledge and skills. The surgical and anesthetic teams function at an extremely high level. I have no doubt that Armenia will very quickly become an international referral center for the region.”

Dr. Wong has developed a love for Armenian coffee, cognac and the countryside. He is married with two young boys and has traveled extensively in Armenia with his family.
