Since the Armenian EyeCare Project was founded in 1992, medical education and training has been the cornerstone of its Five-Point comprehensive strategy to deliver eye care to Armenia. The Project’s Fellowship Program, which has “graduated” eight Fellows since 1997, has been extremely successful with the best of Armenia’s ophthalmologists traveling to the U.S. for one-year of intensive training at America’s finest medical institutions.
After providing long-term fellowship opportunities to Armenian ophthalmologists in leading eye centers in the US and assisting them in establishing their subspecialty clinics in Armenia, the EyeCare Project has launched the second phase of the Fellowship training program.
“Next Generation,” our new educational experience, is designed for young doctors who wish to specialize in subspecialty areas of ophthalmology and participate in new opportunities for continuing medical education. “Next Generation” is a three-month program and will includes the following subspecialties: Cornea; Vitreo Retina; Glaucoma; Neuro Ophthalmology and Orbital Surgery and Pediatric Ophthalmology.
The training program has been designed to be a self-development initiative with the Fellows determining their professional needs while being guided by U.S. and Armenian surgeons. Within the program the EyeCare Project has created an online library with the most recent research and studies in the subspecialties of ophthalmology.
Currently, 20 young doctors from Yerevan and the regions throughout Armenia participate in the program. After they complete the preliminary program, a steering committee comprised of U.S. and Armenian physicians will select the top five who will have the opportunity to participate in a three-month Observership in the U.S. The final Fellows will be selected based on their knowledge acquired from practical experience and written materials and they will be evaluated through written, oral exams and practical tests.
The Fellowship is accredited and each physician completing the course will receive Continuing Medical Education credits from the Ministry of Health of Armenia.
